Chapter Two
The morning dwells on, and the sun goes from a simple glow into a blaze - much like Mandy's emotions. What else can she do but sit, wait, and wonder what other catastrope will come her way? But Mandy feels that life can't be this simple. If she must, then she will run as far as she can to escape this unhappiness. Mandy peddles her bike hard and fast, not sure where she is going and not sure if she cares. It's a beautiful morning and, suddenly, she feels energetic - even good! And all she wants to do is fly away. But as the difficulties of flat tires and sudden busybodies, Connie Kendall, sweep over Mandy, she finds it hard to escape. And so Connie rushes ahead towards Whit's End while Mandy searches for an excuse not to go. She really doesn't want ot be there. She doesn't want to answer questions about her parents or herself. She just wants to fly away. That's hard to do when your wing has gone flat.
